Moon Rock and Rockets

Lilly, Benny, and I got to go with some of my family to see a piece of a rock from the moon at ATK.

Lilly really liked the "shiney triangle with the moon in it" but was disappointed that we didn't actually go to the moon to see the rock.

We did get to see a motor from the shuttle though, which was really enormous, and very cool.

My favorite part was when they moved the building back so the motor was out in the open.

Christmas 2010

Christmas time at our house began with much frantic sewing, trying to get the kids new clothes done in time for the sunday before christmas. Benny's tie was a bit difficult to figure out, but I think they turned out cute.

Christmas morning the kids were excited to see their presents, especially the ones from papa.

Waiting two days with presents under the tree was hard for Lilly so she was excited to finally take off the pretty wrapping paper

Benny was thrilled with all of his loot. He had a good first christmas.

After spending a few hours picking out shatterproof ornaments, and LED lights we put up our tree. Lilly loved putting on the balls and watching the twinkle lights. Benny loved chasing the tinsel and laughing at Lilly. The tree turned out cute and we all had a great time.

Lilly was so excited about having her own pumpkin and talked about it for w

eeks, but when she finally got one to carve she said it was gross and wouldn't touch it until all of the guts were out. She did

like it once the face was carved though.

Lilly picked the costumes this year. She is Pooh Bear and Benny is Eeyore. She wanted me to be tigger so I wore an orange shirt to the trunk or treat. She still calls it my Tigger shirt.

Lilly loves to sing, and does so almost all day. I was finally able to catch her on video, although she kept getting distracted so it isn't as good as it would normally be. I hope you enjoy her songs as much as I do.

When we brought Benny home from the hospital, Lilly was very excited to see us. She waited by the door with Grandma, and brought her bunny to see the new baby.

She wasn't so sure she dared get close to him at first. I don't think she knew quite what he was, so we talked about him having

His name is Benjamin.

At the moment, he is kind of small. Only 20" and 7 lbs 9 oz.

The folks in the NICU have been quite good to him. I rather suspect that he will miss them.

Long overdue update

It has been a while since we posted anything so I will try to catch up on things that have happened so far this year. Since Lilly is the most interesting member of our family at this point most of it will likely be about her :).

January wasn't very eventful. I tried to take down the christmas decorations, but Lilly loved the tree so much she tried to redecorate it with anything she could find including a piece of rope, a pop bottle, and several plastic animals.

Our big adventure in February was decorating and sending valentines to all the grandmas and grandpas. Lilly loved the coloring them, but the best part was putting on the stickers, although she was a little upset when she couldn't take them off again.

We also got to go with Grandma and Grandpa Davidson, Grandma Weston and Aunt Anita to see the last shuttle motor test at ATK. Lilly said the motor was a big scary monster that roared too loud.

The last week of February Lilly and I had one more great adventure. We road the frontrunner train down to Salt Lake for the Diabetic Expo at the South Towne Expo Center. I had just found out I had gestational diabetes, so I went down with my sisters and mom to see what I could learn. Lilly loved riding on the train especially since she didn't have to be buckled in.

So far March has been relitively uneventful. We have been exploring the different parks in Brigham City. Lilly has learned to climb up to and go down even the tallest slides by herself, which is a little scary for me, but she thinks it is great.

As for me, I am getting bigger by the day, and hoping May comes quickly. Mike is working and working, and when he gets a day off he is fixing the mess I make of the computers :).

So, a bit of bad news.

We have had a death in the family. She was so young. Only about two years old. I don't know what got her in the end, if it was her CPU or her motherboard. I have not had a chance to do a complete autopsy yet. So far all I know is that the power supply comes on, but the computer completely fails to POST. No signal to the monitor, no beeps, no keyboard lights. The fans spin up. The optical drives have power. The optical mouse lights up. But the system is completely unresponsive. It could be the RAM, but usually I get SOME post beeps if it is a RAM problem. I guess I need to pull the CPU from the other machine to test in it. That is a MAJOR pain, however, as the cooler is massive and almost impossible to remove. Oh well. It must be done.

Funny Fingers

Lilly has always had a strange facination with socks, and other articles of clothing that she can put on her hands. She is especially fond of oven mits if you put them on and sing the Jaws theme and tickling her. A couple days ago she figured out how to put the oven mit on herself, and tried to do Jaws at papa. If you listen very closely you can even hear her trying to sing the Jaws song.

The other video is one of her playing with a pair of gloves at grandmas house. She likes to do the same thing with her socks if you put them on her hands, but the gloves look funnier.

Summertime fun

this post should be chronologically before the last one, but I had trouble getting the pictures off of my camera.

two of our adventures thus far this summer have been planting a "garden," or two tomato plants in pots on our front porch, and taking an spur of the moment trip to Cheyenne Wyoming. Lilly's favorite thing about the garden was the bucket of dirt she got to play in before we planted the tomatos. Although she still enjoys going outside to see them everyday they are much less interesting now that they are more than dirt.

The trip to Cheyenne was the first overnight trip we have taken with Lilly so it was extra fun. She was really good about riding so far, but she did get pretty tired of the car by the time we got there. She was extra happy when we stopped for lunch at a park in Rock Springs and she got to get out and play on the grass with her papa for a few minutes. The weather was not very nice in Cheyenne, so we didn't get to see much of the city. Mostly we saw all of the different stores as we were hunting for a jacket so that we could go outside without getting soaked. We did brave the rain to see the Big Boy steam engine there. It was pretty amazing to see just how massive it really is. I couldn't get the whole thing in a picture because it was too long. I would have had to go back across the highway to get a wide enough veiw.

Lilly started walking a little the week of mother's day, but wasn't really interested in doing it a whole lot. last week we went to a birthday party for her little friend who had just learned to walk, and she watched him all night. The next day this is what she decided to do.

Easter, Mother's Day and Life With Lilly

As you may have noticed, it has been a day or two since last we posted anything on the blog, so I will attempt to catch you up on a few things that have happened in the last few months.

Lilly got to have her first Easter egg hunt and was so proud of the egg she got. I don't think she had any clue why she was supposed to be excited about it, but everyone else was so she got excited too. I tried to get a few pictures of her looking cute in her easter dress, but she gets too interested in the camera, and doesn't cooperate too well with getting her picture taken, so these are the best I was able to get.

Our next great adventure was a trip to temple square. Lilly and I went down to a wedding reception with some friends and while they went through the temple we wandered around temple square. I tried to get a good shot of her and the christus, but she was more interested in the hole in the side of the bench, so I got kind of a silly one instead. She did enjoy looking at the pictures, flowers and birds, and all of the sister missionaries knew her by name by the time we left, so it was a fun trip.

That night when we got home there was a surprize waitin

g on the bed for Mother's day. I got a great big stuffed dog from my wonderful husband, which Lilly quickly claimed as her new best friend. The pictures were taken the next morning, so she has her nice sheepdog hairdo going on.

The last few pictures are some that I managed to catch of her playing. She loves books, and her doll. I was lucky enough to catch her reading a story to her doll before she reaized I had the camera out, so now you can see just how cute she is. There are also a few of her sitting on the grass. She hasn't had much experience with outside before and has decided she loves it, but isn't so sure about the grass.

First Christmas

Here are a few pictures for anyone who would like to share in the fun of Lilly's first Christmas. She got really good at eating wrapping paper by the time we finished opening presents. On a silly side note, we finally got her to smile for a picture by having Mike sing the pink panther theme song (her favorite song) to her while I took the pictures. That is why she is looking up instead of at the camera.

Christmas Letter, Sort of

This is the time of year when you are supposed to write a letter to everybody to tell them what you have done this year, and basically let them know you are still alive. I do not have addresses for half of the people I would want to send this to, and honestly I have no desire to risk getting a papercut on my tongue by licking envelopes to send letters to the rest of you, so you will just have to be happy with this.
I spent the first five months of the year teaching kindergarten at Willard Elementary. It was an exhausting, but great experience for me. I loved helping my kids learn, and listening to thier stories. They were all facinated by the idea of me having a baby, and brought me so many gifts for her that I didn't have to worry about clothes for her for the first three months. I do miss teaching, but I don't want to go back and miss out on time with Lilly.
July brought the biggest change to our lives this year with the birth of our little girl. The details of that event are already on this blog, so I will just say it was an adventure that has turned our lives upside down. Lilly is a very easy going kid as long as she isn't sleepy or sick she is happy. Her favorite hobbies are rolling over onto her tummy, playing with her stuffed animals, playing in her bouncy chair, playing with her papa, having conversations with anyone who will talk to her, but mostly papa, and going for walks to the post office. Her most recent accomplishments include sitting up by herself, and rolling from her belly to her back (she just did that for the first time about ten minutes ago, so it is really recent).
That last paragaph should give you a pretty good idea of what I have been doing the last five months as well. Watching, marveling, and helping Lilly learn all sorts of amazing new things, and attempting to keep the house clean, and my husband fed along with it. My challange for the moment is learning to use the serger Mike bought me for my birthday/christmas present this year (yes, I know I am spoiled rotten). It seems to be going well since I haven't broken it or sworn at it yet, and most of the things I have tried to make on it have come out looking somewhat like clothing.
My wonderful husband is working as a security guard at ATK Thiokol. He seems to be enjoying his job quite a bit despite the insane schedule. On his days off he hangs out with me and Lilly, or visits the guns at Impact or Al's Sporting Goods so they don't get lonely.
I hope that all of you have had a great year too, and are happy and healthy. Have a Merry Christmas, and a wonderful happy New Year!

Temple Square Lights

The first week in December we took Lilly down to Salt Lake to see the lights on Temple Square because she loves lights so much. We hung out in Ogden until it got dark, doing some Christmas shopping, and stopping for dinner at a chinese buffet. It was Lilly's first experience with eating out, so that was an adventure. It went pretty well. She ate apple sauce while we had our chinese. The only mishap we had was when she dipped her teething ring in my ice cream before I could move it out of the way.

It was very cold when we finally got to Salt Lake so we bundled her up in her snow suit, and blankets. Every few minutes we would wander through one of the buildings to warm up. All of the sister missionaries thought she was so cute in her little bear suit, which she was as you can see. We didn't get to stay long because she got tired and hungry. Despite the shortness of our visit we had a great time. It is so much fun to experience things with Lilly for the first time.

Well after nine long months the cutest baby in the world has arrived. She was born on July 24 at 10:08 AM in Logan utah. She weighed 8 pounds 6 ounces and was 20 1/2 inches long. Every nurse in the hospital had to come in to see her long curly hair, and ask if I had really had her without any drugs. The answer to that is yes. but not by choice. We arrived at the hospital at about 9:30, after a rather painful trip through sardine canyon (Mike says I tried to climb out the window every two minutes or so). The nurses informed me that I had to keep myself from pushing until the doctor got there, so I spent the next 20 minutes trying not to push. The doctor finally got there, and about ten minutes later Lilly came screaming into the world.

We are all home now, and really enjoying being here together as our own little family. Despite the sleepless nights, and seemingly endless dirty diapers, I have never been happier.

District of Columbia law bans handgun possession by making it a crime
to carry an unregistered firearm and prohibiting the registration of
handguns; provides separately that no person may carry an unlicensed
handgun, but authorizes the police chief to issue 1-year licenses;
and requires residents to keep lawfully owned firearms
unloaded and dissembled or bound by a trigger lock or similar device.
Respondent Heller, a D. C. special policeman, applied to register a
handgun he wished to keep at home, but the District refused. He
filed this suit seeking, on Second Amendment grounds, to enjoin the
city from enforcing the bar on handgun registration, the licensing requirement
insofar as it prohibits carrying an unlicensed firearm in
the home, and the trigger-lock requirement insofar as it prohibits the
use of functional firearms in the home. The District Court dismissed
the suit, but the D. C. Circuit reversed, holding that the Second
Amendment protects an individual’s right to possess firearms and
that the city’s total ban on handguns, as well as its requirement that
firearms in the home be kept nonfunctional even when necessary for
self-defense, violated that right.
Held:
1. The Second Amendment protects an individual right to possess a
firearm unconnected with service in a militia, and to use that arm for
traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home.
Pp. 2–53.
(a) The Amendment’s prefatory clause announces a purpose, but
does not limit or expand the scope of the second part, the operative
clause. The operative clause’s text and history demonstrate that it
connotes an individual right to keep and bear arms. Pp. 2–22.
(b) The prefatory clause comports with the Court’s interpretation

arms, so that the ideal of a citizens’ militia would be preserved.

Neither United States v. Cruikshank, 92 U. S. 542, 553, nor
Presser v. Illinois, 116 U. S. 252, 264–265, refutes the individualrights
interpretation. United States v. Miller, 307 U. S. 174, does not
limit the right to keep and bear arms to militia purposes, but rather
limits the type of weapon to which the right applies to those used by
the militia, i.e., those in common use for lawful purposes. Pp. 47–54.
2. Like most rights, the Second Amendment right is not unlimited.
It is not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any
manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose: For example, concealed
weapons prohibitions have been upheld under the Amendment
or state analogues. The Court’s opinion should not be taken to cast
doubt on longstanding prohibitions on the possession of firearms by
felons and the mentally ill, or laws forbidding the carrying of firearms
in sensitive places such as schools and government buildings, or
laws imposing conditions and qualifications on the commercial sale of
arms. Miller’s holding that the sorts of weapons protected are those
“in common use at the time” finds support in the historical tradition
of prohibiting the carrying of dangerous and unusual weapons.

3. The handgun ban and the trigger-lock requirement (as applied to
self-defense) violate the Second Amendment. The District’s total ban
on handgun possession in the home amounts to a prohibition on an
entire class of “arms” that Americans overwhelmingly choose for the
lawful purpose of self-defense. Under any of the standards of scrutiny
the Court has applied to enumerated constitutional rights, this

prohibition—in the place where the importance of the lawful defense
of self, family, and property is most acute—would fail constitutional
muster. Similarly, the requirement that any lawful firearm in the
home be disassembled or bound by a trigger lock makes it impossible

is hence unconstitutional. Because Heller conceded at oral argument
that the D. C. licensing law is permissible if it is not enforced arbitrarily
and capriciously, the Court assumes that a license will satisfy
his prayer for relief and does not address the licensing requirement.
Assuming he is not disqualified from exercising Second Amendment
rights, the District must permit Heller to register his handgun and
must issue him a license to carry it in the home. Pp. 56–64.

Vegas Trip

Well, we made it back in two pieces. One for Abbey and one for me. The vacation was good. It was also needed! We spent most of Monday in SLC wandering around Temple Square and the Church History Museum. It was alot of fun, and the lights were beautiful, even if the picture is fuzzy.

We stayed Monday night at my brother's place in Salem. It was alot of fun to see him, his wife, and six kids. Tuesday, we drove down the rest of the way to Las Vegas, but we did stop at Cove Fort on the way. It was gorgeous there also!

We stayed Tuesday night at Circus Circus. I must admit that I was not impressed with the place. It is one of the oldest places on the strip, and was quite run down and dirty. They put alot of money back into the casino, but kind of let everything else slide. Oh well. That is where their income comes from. Since there was nothing to do there we wandered down the strip and looked at things around town. It was alot of fun, but we were stiff from the drive, and tired by the time we made it back to the hotel room.

Wednesday night, we were at Hooters. It was kind of funny. We were asked a few times where we were staying. When we told people they were shocked that I would take my wife to a place like that. It was probly just about the most family friendly place in Vegas though. Sadly, we completely forgot to get any pictures of it. Following is a picture of it from our room at the Excalibur. The hot tub and pool was pure heaven for our sore selves after all the walking and driving and such.

Thursday night we stayed at the Excalibur. The room was not quite as nice as the one at Hooters, but much much better than Circus Circus. We also decided to splurge and spend $120 to see a dinner show. We went to the Tournament of Kings. It was a blast! Definately worth it!

I will see if I can talk myself into posting some more pictures later.

You gotta pick up this issue.

The dreaded day has come. Some of you whom are accustomed do my online presence will probly have assumed that my scarcity has been a result of the upcoming nuptials. That is not entirely accurate. My computer has two of the old 75GPX Deskstar HDDs in a raid array. Some of you will also remember the class action lawsuit against IBM because of the extremely high failure rate on the 75GXPs. You can probly see where this is going. Sadly, one of the Deskstars evolved into the Deathstar on Saturday. I still have not gotten time to remove it, so I am emailing this from annother machine. Oh well. Wish me luck.

B-Day musings.....

Ok folks. Today is my birthday. I don't typically do much on my birthday. I gotta work, so I will mainly be sleeping today. This year, however, my mates were having none of that. I went to the home of Ahenobarbus and Pulcheria with Aegis tonight. We were going to play some more HARP. Or at least that is what I was led to believe. Apparently, I was mistaken. My alternator died on the way there, so Ahenobarbus and I went to Checker and got a new one and a shop manual (I had not procured one yet, as I have not had the Explorer long). We dropped Brutus (the Explorer) off at my brothers shop on the way back. I figured we would go play a few hours, then I would head back to the shop and install the new one. Well, when we got back to the Textor (Ahenobarbus' and Pulcheria's) residence, Aegis presented me with a gift of "The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy" and Pulcheria had fixed a special dinner for me. Those folks are awesome! We watched the film, and went back to Wes' shop to fix Brutus. Well, apparently Wes got bored and did it while we were gone! Nice one bro!

So I get home at just after 11:00pm. You would think that the entertainment would be over. Nopers. Not yet. Apparently, someone ransacked my room. They got away just before I got back, but an ally of mine got the photo graphic evidence. I will let you look at the pictures.

Amusingly enough, Blogger lets you upload images for posts, but profiles need an image url. I decided to update my profile image, but can't do it without posting the image here first. Oh well. I guess it figures.
I have not had a photo taken since I got home from England six and a half years ago. But, about three years ago this painting was done. Perhaps it will do.

So! On Friday a few of my mates and I go to watch a film at the cinema. Twas a rather entertaining little flick. The rather pretentious title was "The Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy." If you are not familiar with Douglas Adams, you owe it to yourself to become aquainted with his humor. His most famous project is undoubtedly Hitchiker, which he continued to work on in one form or annother until he died. He originaly wrote it as a radio series for the BBC. Later, he wrote the book by the same title. A BBC television series came along and entertained those who had the opportunity to see it. Eventually, there came to be five books in the increasingly inaccurately named "Hitchikers' Trilogy." Sometime in all this, a number of stage productions were put on of the evolving story. A Hitchhiker computer game was also released. The script for the radio show was published, and Mr. Adams said that the radio show and the published script were the only two versions of the story that agreed with each other. He also said that it always bothered him that he let them agree! He was still revising the screenplay for the film when he died. It was alot of fun to see it unfold onscreen. There will be those who will be upset that the movie is not the same as the book, but it most assuredly fits within the framework of all that he wrote. Go see it. Then read the books. And find a recording of the radio shows. Perhaps even the television series. Enjoy a romp through the most difficult computer game ever written. After you have done all that, drop by and let me know what you think of it.

I finished KOTOR II darkside now! I think I will give it a bit of a break before I go back and try to complete all of the side quests. It is a fun game, but since it is so similar to the original, I got burned out on it faster than the other. :P

Ahenobarbus and his wife, Pulcheria, have been playing a pen and paper RPG with BillyCheese and I. Personally, I have been having a blast with it. I am not entirely certain they have been enjoying it much, but I am selfish enough to not let that worry me too much! I have never been very good at the GM thing, but I do belive that this is the best campaign I have ever run. That would not be difficult though, as we have not played much since middle school. The problem is, I am about to explode because I can't tell anyone about the story line. I must say that it is epic! Or at least as large (substitute grand or sweeping as you wish) and intricate as I am ever likely to come up with. I have set it in the early Fourth Age of Middle-Earth because I am absurdly lazy. This way I have the most developed fantasy world ever devised by the mind of man to work with. On the other hand, as the creator of this world never wrote beyond this period, I have almost unlimited lattitude to do what I want with it. Yay for me! Not quite so "Yay!" for the other folks. The deck is most decidedly stacked against them. :D

A mate of mine by the name of Steve is about to flee. I think. He seems fairly certain, but a few things have to fall into place first. He is planning to move south in about two months. Seems that he has become enamored with the idea of going to flight school in New Mexico. Can't say that I blame him. It sounds awesome to me! I have been trying to find out if the company I work for has any posts down in the area. Sadly, it seems to be out in the middle of nowhere, so I doubt that they do. *whimpers*

On annother completely unrelated note, I am thinking of starting up annother blog for political commentary and leave this one for my inane ramblings. I would rather not be the only one posting to it. I would invite others to post to it also and set them up as members so they could. It would be nice to get some discussion going. It is just a thought, anyway.

It has been awhile since I have posted. I bet you enjoyed the break.
I have a good excuse. You see, it goes like this:
After the last post, I was in town, and found an interesting little box. The title printed on its surface proclaimed it to be "Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: Revenge of the Sith". I must say that I was quite fond of the predicessor with a slightly shorter name. I purchased it, brought it home, installed it, and have spent every free moment since playing it. I mean, I even cut my email down to once a day! At this point, I am happy to report that I have finished the game once, and I am about halfway through the second time. This is addictive. I shall not review it for you, as I don't want to waste that much time that could be spent playing it. I shall point you to some other reviews of it though.

Dual Core and 64 bits

I had decided that the AMD Athlon 64 was going to be an iminent upgrade. I have been running my current system for nearly five years now, and I think it is about time for it to find a new home. SLI is awesome, and the high IPC of the AMD option had me leaning that way, but what decided it was that AMD said their dual core processors would work in the current boards. Forgone conclusion. AMD system all the way. But now, after reading this article at Anandtech though, I think I will hold off for a few months to see how the dual core battle starts to shape up. It appears that the Intel solution is not as far away as we were led to believe. I think I can handle saving my pennies for a few more months to see just how the campaign goes. Besides, then I will have more money to spend on the new machine!

I spent two years in England. Canada's system is based on the U.K.'s. It is NOT good! The costs are outrageous (you just don't easily see the cost because it is in your taxes) and the waits are terrible. The hospitals are about as clean as a public school. The doctors are unprofessional. It is not at all unheard of for a surgeon to pop out to the local for a pint or two at lunch and then come back to perform a procedure.
